A Handpan Is More Than an Instrument—It's a Sound Companion which deserves the best! Whether your handpan is made of nitrided steel or stainless steel (also called "ember steel"), here’s how to keep it in top shape!
After you played it?
Once you're done, just give it a quick wipe with a microfiber cloth—simple as that!
I’ll admit, even I don’t always stick to this routine consistently when I’m just playing casually (though I do have a bit of leeway as a handpan maker!). But if you’re near the ocean (hello, salty air) or in a damp environment, I definitely recommend being extra cautious.
People often think stainless steel is practically indestructible, and yes, it's super resistant! But even stainless can oxidize, so a little attention goes a long way.

Storage tips?
A wall mount is a great option! Of course, not everyone has space, or wants their instrument hanging as decor.
And hey, gents, if you’re thinking of selling this as a decor idea to your wife... good luck! In my experience, this happens about as often as a solar eclipse.
If you keep it in its bag, leave it slightly open to avoid any condensation buildup. And of course, be mindful of curious kids or pets running around—I've had to retune a few instruments after they took a tumble because of unexpected collisions.
How should I clean it ?
An alcohol wipe (70° alcohol or acetone) at least once a year is the way to go.
After each alcohol cleaning, add a light layer of oil to keep it protected.
Don’t have handpan-specific oil on hand? No worries—a little linseed oil works just fine!
Oil isn’t strictly necessary for stainless steel, but it won’t hurt either. Remember, even stainless can oxidize!
These Basics Will Help Keep Your Handpan in Top Shape!
With these tips, your instrument should stay in great condition and ready to create beautiful sounds for a long time.
